CNC Machining Materials and Finishes

Material grade affects machining process, tolerance stability, surface finish, inspection method, cost and delivery risk. This materials hub helps buyers prepare clear CNC machining RFQs without creating separate material pages for every grade.

Common CNC Machining Materials

Material selection should match the part application, strength, corrosion resistance, weight, conductivity, surface finish and inspection requirements.

  • Stainless steel for corrosion-resistant shafts, connectors, sleeves and fittings
  • Aluminum for lighter housings, plates, brackets, prototypes and milled parts
  • Brass, copper and bronze for sleeves, fittings, bushings and selected mechanical components
  • Carbon steel and alloy steel for strength, wear, shaft, spacer and sleeve applications

Information to Send With Your RFQ

When possible, include the exact material grade on the drawing. If the grade is not fixed, describe the working environment and functional requirements so the material can be reviewed before quotation.

  • Required grade or acceptable material alternatives
  • Heat treatment, coating, passivation or finish notes
  • Critical dimensions and surface requirements
  • Quantity, prototype stage or small batch production requirement

Material, Process and Inspection Review

The same geometry can require different machining decisions depending on the material. Before quotation, we review whether the selected material affects tool choice, burr control, surface protection or dimensional stability.

  • Machining process suitability
  • Deburring and edge condition requirements
  • Surface protection and packing notes
  • Inspection focus for functional features

Material Information Helps Avoid RFQ Delays

Material grade affects machining process, surface finish, tolerance stability, inspection method, and cost. Buyer drawings should state the required grade clearly.

Buyer Checks

  • List exact material grade, such as 304 stainless steel, 6061 aluminum, brass, or carbon steel.
  • State hardness, heat treatment, or coating requirements if they apply.
  • Confirm whether material documentation is required before production.

RFQ Details to Send

  • Send drawing, material, quantity, tolerance, and finish.
  • Mention whether samples or prototype approval are needed.
  • Add working environment notes for corrosion, wear, heat, or electrical use.
